Conceptual Photograph
This conceptual photography triptych, is a contemporary spin, showcasing the Town of Palm Beach historic, landmark fountain named, the MIZNER MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN. This gorgeous circular, concrete structure is composed with magnificent sea horses poised to jump with legs reaching for the sky. Dedicated by the Memorial Fountain Commission in 1929 and located in the commercial heart of the Town of Palm Beach, the plaza was presented to the town by Harold S. Vanderbilt, its chairman, “as a gift from its residents.” The design was by local architect Addison Mizner. I decided to take profile portraits of these mystical horses of the sea (known as hippocamps horses), as my tribute to life here on Palm Beach Island. I love the different hues of the grey concrete and the natural stains on their faces from encroaching mold. I love the frozen momentum of their webbed feet, and how their realistic depiction of sea horses bring childhood memories back to life. It was a perfect over cast day here on the island when I walked over to the fountain with my tripod and camera bag. Once satisfied with the portraits, I took another look around and decided to spend some time in the newly landscaped, connecting garden shooting the square topped trees. While reviewing the digital images it was very easy to determine that I would create a triptych to emphasize the grandeur and beauty of each profile that would represent each direction. NORTH/SOUTH, EAST & WEST. The foliage of the tree tops inspired me to use my characteristic ‘mirror image’ approach for the backgrounds along with a negative filter to maintain a monochrome finish.
